Every year unsafe entry into confined spaces within the workplace can and unfortunately does lead to occupational fatalities within the U.S. These preventable fatalities are often the result of insufficient worker training, unfamiliarity with confined space hazards, using inadequate safety equipment, or not having a clearly defined rescue plan should an emergency occur. Confined spaces once identified require a permit system be followed unless they can be safely declassified to a non-permit status. Under 29 CFR 1910.146(c)(7), OSHA does have provisions for declassifying permit-required confined spaces into non-permit confined spaces. Unfortunately, all too often employers do not understand or follow those provisions properly, which can inevitably put their workers at risk. Being able to differentiate effectively and safely the two and follow a safe declassification process can mean the difference between a safe vs. unsafe entry. This webcast will focus on employer requirements for declassification of permit-required confined spaces into a non-permit status, and importantly understanding the difference between the two classifications.
